In the market for a new sonar/GPS unit and wanted to get opinions on Lowrance vs Hummingbird. Looking at the HDS5 and 500 series hummingbirds. Interested in durability as my Lowrance 520c fried once out of warranty, which i read is a common problem. Im already wired for a lowrance but would be willing to switch over.

Have heard nothing but bad reports about the Hummingbirds. If you want good opinions go to BassPro.com and check out all of the reviews. I have used both Garmin and Lowrance and run a HD7 in my boat - absolutely love it.
My neighbor owns one of the biggest marine dealerships in the country and he recommended the new Lowrance units hands down. |

Have had both. Lowrance has held up the best for me. Hummingbird only lasted 1.5 years and I would not buy Hummingbird products again. That being said, all this new technology such as side scanning and 3D, don't think I can compare apples to apples now. Good luck

The hds units are alot better than the 500 series Lowrance used to make. The main problem was the antenna problems. The Humminbirds are also very nice but I cant give too much of a review as I do not have first hand on them. But, my next unit going in the kayak will be a hds5 as the sounder in the hds units are incredible!!
