Triple Tail Survey Poll
Please take the time to correctly vote on the poll to which answer best suites you
This is just a survey to see how many triple tail are acutally targeted and caught by anglers across the state of La Please Vote Thanks Tripletail (Lobotes surinamensis) reach a maximum size of 40 pounds although the average size is much smaller. Tripletail, as the name implies, have a body that appears to have three tails. This is actually just the anal and dorsal fins. Tripletail are common in the Gulf of Mexico but are a species that gets little fishing pressure. Most tripletail are caught as an incedental catch by anglers targeting lemon fish or sometime snapper fisherman if they happen to be in the right place at the right time and stay alert. Tripletail are a curious fish. The are like a mixture of other fish looks and habits. They have the general appearance of a large crappie in body shape, yet have the coloration of a google-eye(warmouth) or a rockbass. Their habits appear to be taken from other fish as well. They swim/float on their side just like a flounder. But they are truely a surface fish, lounging around like a gar. And thats exactly what they do, float around under some sort of floating structure such as sargasmo weed or any trash just waiting for some small fish to come along. Not knowing that the tripletail is a fish and not floating debris, once the small fish, shrimp or crab come close enough the tripletail strikes quickly. This behavior is exactly what gar do. For years many people wouldn't eat a tripletail if they caught one because they thought that the fish was sick due to its habit of floating near the surface on its side. Tripletail however have some of the best tasting meat of any fish that swims.

That Triple Tail are not a target and do not need any kind of limit, due to you have about 60 days max a year to catch them in the gulf

Well we better start looking @ a real conservation problem, ie Big Lake's oyster bed issue!!! So the triple tail are thick and close this year...how often does that happen?? Not to mention the extreme salinity we are having. The huge #'s of trips being caught is a rare occurrence and the window of opportunity to get out and get'em is very small!! Things have to be perfect to produce those #'s!! Sounds like jealousy or someone needs a reason to whine!!!!

nobody. It came up a few years ago and was dropped. This has all been started here on SC and worked up into a froth by CCA bashers. |

Well I support the CCA 100% but I know for a Fact some of the local liberals were pissed about the trip them boys had and made some comments to others! So why do they open there mouth about a mans fish??? Why do they tell others that we need to do something and keep this from happing again...This part is not say so..this part is truth

At this time, the survey shows 65% have never caught a tripletail. I have caught several in Florida but none in LA. I'll be looking for them in Lake Borgne over the next couple of months.

I know we gave it a shot trying to go offshore and catch them yesterday. Made it 12 miles out and turned around. Seas were a lot higher than forecasted. We could have made it where we needed to go but no way we could have seen the fish in those conditions.
As I can only fish the weekends I have to have the stars align for me to make it out there... |
