Call Pack and Paddle in Lafayette, i just got my new one from there and so far I like it. The guys at Academy couldn't answer any of my questions I had so I left. Talk to Skip @ P&P. I got a Garmin Dakota 20. They have an Etrex that is in your price range.

Garmin hands down has the best gps systems. Their sonars are pretty crappy but that doesnt matter on a handheld. I have used a garmin gpsmap 76c on the water and it was really nice

I've got a Garmin Oregon 400t , it works great. On both land and water, it's hard to read in direct sunlite so be ready for that on most handhelds.

If u have an iPhone there are very good gps apps. I have navionics which is the same as lowrance for marine and for the woods I have motion x. Just as accurate as any other gps and you can get satellite images and topo overlays and most of it is free.

And if you get out of a service area, your iPhone and anything that runs off the phone system like GPS won't work.

Gps and and your phone service are two different connections. I've been in the basin with no service and my gps still worked.

I'm talking about the one that comes with the phone, but maybe purchased GPS apps operate independently from the phone?

Still carry a compass. GPS runs on batteries and can break also
