Ok I know I have asked a similiar question in the past but I am just looking for new more recent opinions. My brothers and I are trying to get my dad a shotgun that is more durable to duck hunt with and are looking for opinions. But before ya'll all say SBEII and those very nice expensive guns, let me tell you we are not able to spend that much... I wish we could. So me and my brother have Benelli Nova pumps and really like them. I was just looking for other options... like what about Stoeger? Anyone have one of their guns? Pump or Auto? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have always liked the 870 but do they make it sythetic or in camo? Probably not I guess... how does it hold up to the weather?

stay away from mossberg autos. One of my buddys has one that is two or three years old and is a junk. It literally fell apart last year when he shot a 3.5" shell out of it. during teal season this year it kept misfiring. And yes he does clean his gun

Not sure about the Mossberg autos, but their pumps are solid.

I bought a remington 870 Supermag in 07 and pitted the barrel the first year. Of course I shot a lot of steel out of it, but still. I bought a Browning Maxus last year and hammered the ducks. No recoil to speak of and Light years better than a pump. It is also the lightest gun on the market. That being said, It started cutting up lately, not feeding shells right. I brought it back to the dealer yesterday and they said I should have it back by Thanksgiving at the latest ![]() Edit: The other poster that talked about the 870 Supermag kicking like a mule is right. Wayyyyy too much kick. Don't shoot more than 1.5 boxes of 3 1/2" without proper insulation, or a limb saver. 3 1/2" off of a bare shoulder will hurt and make you wince after a while. That's okay, back to the 870 Remington Supermag until then. |

Good choice on the benelli super nova. I have one that is my back up gun since I shoot a benelli auto. You cannot go wrong with benelli or bretta.

I would stay away from Stoeger if you plan on using it often. My uncle bought a brand new camo auto a year ago and it's a piece of junk. I would shoot a pump before I bought an auto Stoeger or Mossberg. What about a Remington 870 pump or 1187/1100 auto? If you are trying to save some money.

yes the 870 comes in black synthetic or camo patterns. Costs a little more. Great all around gun for the price.

Yes 870s can be purchased in camo or synthetic. And they also make a 3.5 870 "Super" Magnum.

I have a Mossberg pump as well. Good gun, just stay away from their autos as well as Stoeger autos.

My brother in law bought a synthetic camo 870 from wal mart two or three years ago and loves it. Go to a few pawn shops and look in the quick quarter and other web sites. You can find some pretty good deals on used guns for good prices.

If looking at auto's, you cannot go wrong with a remington 1100; if looking at pumps, consider a nova and mossberg. I am not disputing anything previously said (pro or con), I have only personal experience with the above models.
I do think the idea of two sons giving a father a shotgun is pretty damn awesome and something that he (father) will remember for a long time. The gift of a gun seems to always be father to son, so your present is very special. Wish I had a dad to do the same. |
