Wanted to hit Prien today, but was real foggy and lots of barge traffic along the channel. So I went to Lake Charles and fished around the South bank. Nothing. Also didn't want to catch a buttload of Sand Trout in Big Lake.
I heard birds working farther North, so I cranked up and putt putted till I saw them. They were working around Lake Charles Yacht Club. If fished the point on the West side of the club and caught 6 decent Trout, 2 Reds and 4 White Bass. I threw the Bass back in cause I wasn't sure what they were and if they were undersized or not. Caught everything on topwater. Once the sun broke, I couldn't catch anything on topwater, so I swapped to popping cork and DOA Shrimp. Nothing. Swapped to Sand Eel Jr. then to Jerk Jr., nothing. Went home and cleaned boat and fish. Water is a lot nicer up North than Big Lake was yesterday. |

I found out after I finished fishing that the bottom picture was a White Bass, and it was legal to keep. Maybe next time I will eat a few of them.

Most of the Trout I been catching in Prien are undersized or barely make 12" in the past month or so. I have just been fishing the channel though.

That would be a hybrid or some call them whites. They thick up the river. Been limiting out on them in the evening. Marsh works Bayou thumpers. Very picky fish when it comes to bait selection, rattle trap, swim baits, and a few topwaters.
Been catching out the kayak and taking a ride. |

5 per day with no more than 2 over 30" (Hybrid or Stripper) or 50 per day (White bass) No minimum size for either? Are they good to eat? Thanks |

And yes, I've found them to be good to eat. Little bit of red meat in them, about the same as a red fish. I just trim it out. |

Easily confused.. the hybrids and whites are a little different.. talked to a game warden on the river the other day.
http://www.stripers247.com/Hybrid-striper.php Just tryin' help ya. Good catch bud. Supposedly the hybrids is a striped and white cross. They have taken over a lot of the calcasieu. We've always had stripers at barrier..and big ones too. Not were getting allot of these 3-6 lb hybrids schooling up |

So, the difference in a White Bass and a hybrid bass is the "broken" lines on the hybrids.
IE. all the little dots are not in a straight line on the hybrids. |

White and hybrid is the same thing. The difference in a hybrid and a striper is the broken lines. A striper don't have broken lines.

Saw your pics on saltycajun of the hybrid striper. LDWF released 300,000 in the river in 2009.
I used to catch some pretty nice stripers up around the saltwater barrier. hard to identify from hybrids when they are smaller. the true test is the medial tooth patch on the back of thetongue. the hybrid and the striper have 2 patches while the white only has one. I am not so sure what you had was a true striper because of the upbroken lines. Last edited by Ray; 10-28-2011 at 03:25 PM. |

That doesnt look like it has broken stripes to me.
Hybrids must be stocked as they do not reproduce naturally. http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/3386.htm Unless they stock the river I doubt thats a hybrid |
