The Finest Kind Sportfishing boat "Ikaika Kai" has landed one huge marlin. The big fish weighed in at 915 lbs. Caught off the Lanai lighthouse on July 1, 2012, the blue marlin is the biggest caught in Maui County this year. The previous biggest one was caught on Finest Kind and weighed 760 lbs.

shame they killed it. Of course, it could have died while fighting. Otherwise shame on him for keeping it.

There are no regulations in hawaii. No island conservation association. The locals keep the catch to feed the family/families as they are very tight knit. No meat goes to waste this I promise. They use he marlin to make jerky which is sold in stores and some of the restaurants use it in tacos or as a signature dish. I've eaten blue marlin striped marlin and spearfish while there and I can tell u it's all really good. The jerky is a little odd but still good. Te striped marlin lightly pan seared on a cracker with cream cheese and some type of oil vinegar drizzled over the top was delicious.

It used to be worse back in the day. U had buyers waiting at the docks to bid on fresh marlin. I know they have scaled it way back and now catch and release isn't the way but it's slowly catching on (for the charters anyhow). Telling a local to throw any of there catch back whether it be a marlin , mackerel, or parrot fish caught in a cast net will probably end with a black eye!
