...hey fellas, I was referred to this site from a member of another forum (www.bullnettlenews.com). I am going to be in Lake Charles (staying in Sulphur) for a week for some side work, but I'm gonna have a good bit of free time. After talking with a few people, I had no idea this area was so hot for salwater action, that far inshore, so I'm bringing my rods and net. Any tips on spots to shore fish? Accessible piers? Jetties? Reds, Specks, Flounder, whatever. Just looking to kill some time and learn something new. I fish Grand Isle and the MS Gulf Coast a good bit, but this area will be 100% new to me. I'm coming down from God's country, Oxford, MS

LC can be a lot trickier than GI for shore fishing, depending on what your preferred catch is and the time of year. "The beach" (Holly Beach) muddies up much easier, and we need a north wind for a few days to clear it out and turn the fishing on. The Calcasieu River delivers a lot of freshwater and mud and we're now waiting on the freshwater to exit the system and the muddy water (chocolate milk to clear up).
On Sunday, we watched a couple of guys land two bull red drum from the pier at Calcasieu Point, but the more common catches at the pier (and most piers/banks in the system) are black drum and gafftop catfish, with some croaker and smaller redfish mixed in. The most common location for bull reds is probably the Cameron Jetty Fishing Pier, and you can also walk our and fish the rocks (be careful) or fish the ship channel along the rocks from points just inside the Gulf of Mexico. There are some spots to shore fish Prien Lake and lots of bayous and channels higher in the system, but with the fresh, muddy water right now, it's hard to say which spot might be better than the others or whether there is much promise at all. I really like to fish south of the fresh water and mud under these conditions. Also, PM me, I have a boat and I'm in town for a couple of weeks if chasing bulls is your thing, it is what I like and I'm kinda good at it. I don't run all over the lake and marsh chasing specks and smaller reds. |

Thanks guys. Sound advice. Looking forward to exploring around the area.
Mathgeek, I'd certainly be glad to fuel your boat up, if you wanna make a run. I'll shoot you a PM. Also, from looking at my site maps, it doesn't look like I'm too far from the Gulf front beach. Looks less than an hour away? |

Made it in and got settled. I was gonna ride down to the Gulf, just to sightsee, but I've been in the car long enough.
![]() Next question: Which restaurant for good local fare? Some folks told me about The Boiling Point and there's some seafood restaurant, right across the interstate from me, off of Ruth Rd. ![]() |

Kewl! My second site today is over by Darrel's. I see a Po-boy in my lunch future. Gonna have to hit all these places.
I'll be all over the place, in the LC/Sulphur area. If you see a little short dude in a tiger striped camo hat, wearing a chartreuse/orange safety vest, taking notes (for the gubment) on the side of the road, toot your horn. That'll be me..... ![]() |

If you cross over the big bridge [going east] on I-10, Steam Boat Bill's is on the North side about a 1/2 mile from the bridge. Get off on the south side and go down a little ways and make a U-turn under the hwy.
Good seafood and poboys.....shrimp is my favorite. |
