I have a 97 ocean runner I just bought. Tried hooking up power wires from the battery and right away it started spinning over. I have my hot wire hooked to the starter and on the ground side of the starter I hooked up ground wire is this right? The key is completely out of the ignition

It may be a problem with the key switch. I had a 96 Johnson outboard and it stayed spinning when I turned the key off.

Solinoid may be stuck. Check that first.

Mine did the same thing and it turned out being a short in the wiring harness.
