Gun safety

Guys,

Hunting season is winding down but please don't become coherent with your guns and the safety and responsibility associated with them.
There were 2 recent gun accidents in the Lake Charles Area in the past couple weeks(that I know of), 1 including my 21 year old neighbor.

Gun Safety has always been #1 in my hunting adventures and if you're caught swinging a barrel around like a magic wand I'm gonna give you a tongue lashing at the least. I kicked my uncle out the truck a few weekends back and made him walk back to the camp for bringing a loaded rifle in my truck and then refusing to unload it, saying "the safety is on".

For all the kids that read this site, if you aren't used to handling guns or using them leave them be! Ask for guidance from someone that is, they will be more than glad to show you the right way.

THERE ARE NO "DO OVERS" IN GUN ACCIDENTS!

Feel free to post some of your safe gun rules below. I'll start.

#1 Always point the barrel in a safe direction or at something you intend to kill.

#2 After a volley of ducks are shot I like to give a little reminder "safetys back on and barrels up"

These are the rules that were drilled into me 15 years ago:

1. Treat every weapon as if it is loaded.

2. Never point a weapon at anything you do not intend to kill.

3. Keep the weapon on safe until you are ready to fire.

4. Keep your finger off the trigger until you intend to fire.

Muzzle awareness at all times!!!

When handed a weapon or picking one up, always check to make sure the chamber is empty.

Always make sure the chamber is clear before handing the weapon off.

I always preach safety more when im hunting people out of layouts. Keep the barrel on top the front rail not in the foot pocket. and when me or the dog is in the field point the barrel straight up. Had a dude try to shoot a cripple right over my dogs head this year. I almost sent him back to his truck.

I carry a loaded pistol in my truck on safety and normally have a loaded 380 in my pocket on safety.

Had a gun go off in my blind few weeks ago. Hunt was over at that point.

i been seeing alot of pictures with the gun laying beside the dead animal an the barrel pointed right at the proud hunter we need to watch thiskids an adults secure the gun in a safe place before taking a picture

Yea ask the guy a few years ago that set his shotgun on the bow of the boat and turned around to do something on the bank when the dog stepped on the gun and filled his hindquarters up wit #4 hot steel.

Shooting "Lanes" a Must.. This happened last year... I had given a safety talk in the blind that morning..

Well about 50 teal zoomed in on my extremely right end of the blind where I was seated.. My friend got excited, and as the birds passed my side of the blind he decided to shoot almost right over my head..

Lucky I saw it coming and stayed seated.. The concussion from the gun shot blast sent me to the floor in the pit blind.. Almost blew my left ear drum OUT..

I was deaf in the Left ear for almost one month.. My hearing came back slowly.. But It took almost a month..

No shooting over each others heads are a MUST.

PS. I haven't hunted with My "friend" SINCE that Happened.. That one laps in judgement on his part ended our 14 yr. friendship.

1. Every gun is loaded!

2. Safe aim is safe shooting. (think before you shoot. You can't take a shot back but, you can always shoot another squirrel, deer or, duck)

3. No trigger unless you're ready to let the round go down range.

4. One of my BIG pet peeves. When you hand off a firearm to someone to shoot, safety is ON! (i.e. teaching a youth how to shoot at the house or, the range) Even in teaching my 6 yr old how to shoot his bb gun, he knows that when I hand it to him, the safety will be ON!

5. Perhaps the most important of all. Firearm education. Teaching kids that "guns are bad" or, "guns kill people" is NOT education. To me, that's like beating a deaf dog for not listening! Teach them how they can be bad. Teach them how they can kill people. Teach them proper handling and, how to handle a situation outside of the house where a gun may be in their presence. (i.e. going to a friend's house where the friends may be "playing" with a gun.)

AMEN AMEN, we can all get complacent..Great post! No matter how long we've been handling guns you can not cut corners when it comes to safety!!

Always be conscious of what is behind your target! I have seen too many hunters that are so focussed on their target that they don't notice the house or camp that is directly behind the target when they shoot.

Does any one know of any hunter safety courses coming up in the New Iberia area? I have been invited to go hunting this past season a few times, but I have not taken to hunter safety course. Also, my son is showing interest in hunting so I need to take it so I can take him.
