Pirogue Build tips?

Planning to build a pirogue to fish some of the small bayous around the house and for duck hunting. Not looking to build anything bigger than 12', really looking at a 10'.

Anyone ever build one and have any tips on materials? I've read about just using regular ole exterior plywood, then covering it with epoxy or fiberglass.

I bought the Uncle John's kit years ago at Stine's. All it includes are the two stem pieces and nine pieces of wood to build three ribs, two sides and a bottom per rib. The stems are the part that you really need if you haven't built before, they are cut on several angles to shape the pirouge. I don't think Stine's carry the kits anymore but you can google search and mail order one. He lives in Carlyss but doesn't sell from his house. I used two sheets of 1/4" AC plywood and covered in fiberglass and epoxy. Also a 1x4 16' long to rip into side rails. Mine is 14' and has held two men ~400# and guns and decoys but it was low in the water, 1" freeboard. You can buy the epoxy and fiberglass cloth from Raka's in Florida.

If you going to fiberglass and cloth it you make it out of Luan. If you don't want to fiberglass the whole thing A 1/4 sheet of Marine plywood is $52, you can get 16' sheets at Robichaux in Raceland for $140 or so. I would still tape and fiberglass the seams. If you have a decent table saw the end pieces don't look to be to hard to cut.

One of the guys that makes custom wood pirogues and kayaks recommends to use Ultraply XL that is sold at Lowes... He says that Luan or any other Luan type material will delaminate over time.

He uses 6oz E-Glass on the rolls. S-Glass is about double the cost but it holds less resin so it will be overall lighter.

I've never done this but I enjoy reading and watching some of these custom builds... This guy I'm talking about makes some beautiful boats.

I'm not fimilar with Ultraply but if it has lengths over 8ft it may be easier to use that instead of plywood. If you use regular exterior plywood you'll have to join two pieces to get the 12ft length you want. It involves tappering the edges with a belt sander or plainer, glueing and clamping. It's time consuming.
