Good Afternoon, taking a good buddy of mine to Big Lake on Friday. This is only my 5th time on the lake. I've seen reports that the Ship Channel and West Cove have been productive lately. I've never fished that far south before, what's the best location to launch and get some live bait at? I've seen posts about Spiciers?
If anyone could provide a few tips for a newbie it would be appreciated. |

Spicers is a good launch and they have bait usually (I call first).
Can also launch at public cameron piers down there way south on E. side but no bait. Bring a cast net to catch bait and launch at cameron or go out of spicers. Careful in west cove it can be shallow. |

Since your coming from Breaux Bridge I assume ... ?
This may be closer. Easy straight run south in the ship channel to west cove area and they have live shrimp most of the time (Call to make sure) http://www.cppj.net/index.aspx?page=185 https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer...09656&t=h&z=17 |

Yepp if you're coming from the east, Calcasieu point or Hebert's would be closer. Calc point should have bait and Hebert should too.

I wasn't aware that Calcasieu opened again, its been since last teal season since I've been.
I am in a bass tracker so I don't have a lot of draft so I should be ok in West Cove but I'll defiantly pay attention now. Should I focus more in the Ship Channel or the Lakes? Thanks guys again! |

If you launch out of Spicers, make sure you follow the channel and dont try and cut through the mud flat. First time I launched out of there, I didnt realize where the channel was and ran right into the mud flat!
You should be fine in West cove, just be aware of the surroundings. |

Talk about embarrassing too! My experience was on a Saturday morning and it seemed like everyone at the dock left to head to the lake at the same time. For some reason, I think I was in front of the 15-20 boats all leaving so I had to act like I had done this before.... Very embarrassing when all the boats are passing by and watching me do this! Even on the highest of high tides, I dont attempt it! Gun shy i guess

All of this has pretty much made me rethink my options. I'll just stick to Vermilion Bay tomorrow. I don't know if the specks are in yet but I am certain I can drown enough shrimp to find some reds. Y'all enjoy the holiday weekend and be safe.
If you see a Black Bass Tracker with a white Trolling Motor say hi! |

Man. It's not as bad as they're making it seem. And shaking to Spicers would just be going out of your way anyway. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
