COLD/FREEZING weather

Probably going to have a fish kill after all of this weather is said and done. Any redfish, flounder, etc. left in the marsh will be history. Mud Lake will likely get wiped out as well as CAmeron Prairie behind the wiers. Time will tell, but from the looks of it, it won't be good for the fish.

I would have to agree that all of the fish in the shallow water will probably not make it.

Mid 90's there was a big fish kill.

Was it this wide spread and how low were the temps then? How deep does the water have to be for the fish to be safe? Sorry for all the questions, I just find this very interesting and Im having no luck searching the internet.

There was a hard freeze for a few days. Ice everywhere. It was hard to find any water
for ducks to land in. When you did, you could shoot the ducks and wait for about 30
minutes and the whole flock would return.
Big Lake was full of dead or near dead Specks and a few Reds. I didn't see any Flounder.
I am hoping that most of the Specks are out in the gulf due to all the fresh water in
Big Lake.

Thats a good point and a good bit of them probably are. I would assume it would take saltwater species less time to replenish then it would for fresh water fish...Im still praying for the best

Ray I was thinking that also... Most of the specks should be gone and with all the cold days we have had should of been a warning

Wouldnt they move to the ship channel over the last few days?

In the gulf, the top 6 or 8 ft. get cold, below that it stays about the same temp.
But in the river, the whole river can get cold due to all the water running out on
a low tide.

What I don't understand is how the water can stay so fresh. We have had low water
levels in the for the past month or more. It seems like the salt water would invade the
lake sooner or later.

I would think the reason its still fresh is because of lack of south winds?

That is part of it. The amount of rains this year don't help either.
But I never seen it so fresh for so long.
But when the tides are high, it seems like the salt water should
over come the low levels in the lake and get more salty.

Guys, don't forget to prep your boats.......and standing water in the Hull or in the motor will freeze and expand. Both fiberglass and aluminum WILL crack from the pressure.....its going to rain a lot today so make sure to check it out tonight before it gets cold

ray its a lot of freshwater coming down the calcasieu in oakdale is still out of banks

hopefully most fish sense the change and should be in deep water by now. I was told water only had to get to 40* for fish to die. Was told water was 49* last weekend.

Water was 44 at heberts landing Fri. But your deep water with movement should hang upper 40s to 50s

Ship channel was at 48/49 on sunday. we actually found pockets in the flats where the water was 53. no fishies though.

I was at the Moss Bluff boat launch a week ago, and the water was very low compaired to normal. Water was 12" to 18" below normal. Several times this week I passed over the Calcasieu river and it was usually a little low.

Something must be blocking the water up North if it is low in Moss Bluff and high in Oakdale.
