Toyota Tacoma Transmission Help Needed

Need a little help. My 17 year old nephew's 2002 tacoma, after braking hard and then getting back on the gas, hangs between gears and then jams back into gear. I was thinking to flush or change the transmission fluid. Is this a waste of time? Is the transmission itself screwed or could it be some kind of electrical sensor on the transmission? Any ideas on who I should bring it to in the Zachary / Baton Rouge area? Any help is appreciated. Trying to help him get his truck in line for his start at LSU next year.

Took me a minute to think of the name of the place. Kennys transmission in baton rouge is really good. When i had my drag car, me and all my transam/camaro buddies used him for rebuilds.
