Default Motor Trouble

This thread might be moved but I figured more people would read it here than the Boat forum.

I got a call yesterday from the guy who bought my old motor asking if I had the serial number on it because it was stolen. He has a good idea of the person who stole it and even knows where the motor is located but without serial number it is his word against the thief. As of this morning, he has an idea to track down the original owner (not me) and back track the different sales through the years to establish ownership, he also got the Ser # off the stolen motor. The last three owners never worried about bills of sale since it was a used motor and we all buy and sell used equipment. I did not give him a bill of sale and the outboard guy I bought it from did not give me one either. Currently, I do not have the serial number on my used motor and I would bet most of us that buy used don't either. Tomorrow, I will get the serial number off my motor and make sure it is in a safe place.
FWI, the thief pulled the serial number off the bracket but did not think about the two other places they can be found.
