Some years there has been chunks of ice floation down the Mississippi river in Baton Rouge.

I use to be involved a little with barge traffic going up the Mississippi. Usually sometime in mid-November the upper river closes to all barge traffic. This is due to low water as you go up past about St. Louis, MO. The river is not reopened until the ice [as seen in the pictures] starts to melt or float away. Those barges in the picture may not move for 6 more weeks.

When the ice "dam" breaks.....we get a rise down south.
