That's what I've been doing with my maters cause the grackles/blackbirds and the mockingbirds will eat the ripe ones on the vine. I've picked about 40 romas and the cherry tomatoes are taking off now. Also have picked a few bell peppers, some hot peppers and a couple eggplant.
Only got a small plot on side my house - 4 tomatoes, 2 bell peppers, 1 eggplant, 1 jalapeno, 1 cayenne, and some herbs, but it gets us a few fresh veggies during the summer.
The dry weather has seemed to take a toll this year 'cause the garden seemed to do better the last couple years.
