Default Side Imaging question

I have a hummingbird 798 SI HD combo. I recently installed it on the transom of my boat. Upon first introduction, when i would get on plane the transducer was throwing alot of water into the boat. The transducer was about an inch below the transom. I moved the transducer flush with the transom and now do not pick up any of the side imaging that i should. Fished the river sat and couldnt pick up any of the underwater structure on side imaging.... Should i move the transducer back to its original position? could the 1/2" move have messed up the imaging? is there any kind of reccomended mount you guys suggest. It is not close to the prop soo i dont think that is an issue. If i do move it back to its original position i may mount it to where i can adjust it up and down to avoid all the splashing on plane. What are your thoughts and experience with mounting these things to get the best performance?
