Default Repainting Decoys

Looking for some insight here. I can't afford to buy any new dekes for this year. Well, I can, but with me and my wife's student loans, I feel that money can be spent elsewhere. So, I am resorting to repainting, but I still can't afford to spend a whole lot. I've had a few people tell me, and have read several times, about just painting the decoys brown or black. Brown seems more realistic to me, but just curious if anyone has any experience with doing this. I'm willing to try anything, as my decoys are about as white as a piece of paper. What kind of paint is best? Outdoor obviously, but what would be better, a flat or glossy?
