Pretty much most birds are protected if they are not a gamebird or 'nuisance' bird (blackbird, grackles, crows). Some introduced species like starlings, pigeons, house sparrows, and a few others aren't protected. Lots of protected birds have fallen victim to a bb or pellet gun on a bird feeder though
Forget what organization (Audubon?) but one of their goals is to keep common birds common. Passenger pigeons once numbered in the billions (with a b

) and went extinct pretty quick but that was loss of habitat. Believe it or not in the 1950s the brown pelican was extirpated from Louisiana and almost went extinct. Hard to believe as common as they are now. Alligators have a similar success story
