150+ yards is very do-able for the average joe with a 12 foot surf rod, With perfect technique its quite possible to do it even with an 8 or 9 foot surf rod.

You have to get the technique down right so that you properly "load" the rod when casting it. There are many youtube video's on the subject, I prefer to use what i call the "easy cast" which assist's greatly in loading the rod, a second option that works pretty well is the pendulum cast.

I may not always agree with Mathgeek on everything but he's not blowing smoke up you rear end... (hmmmm wonder what kind of smoke he would be blowing if he was.. )
