Default Big Lake report 11-5-09

Got down to Calcasieu Point landing ~ 10 AM Thur. and there was about 30 trucks in the parking area and a bunch of bank fisherpersons.

Water conditions......stained looking and ~ 4 to 6" visability in Turners bay area.....little better over near the east bank. Down toward Hebert's landing there was ~ 6" visability and again a little better on the east side....but not much difference.

Note: The Calcasieu river in Moss Bluff is a dark brown and maybe a foot above normal.

Wind.....5 to 8 mph mid day and < 5 mph late.....very calm.

Tide......10 AM..... the water in the ship channel was really falling hard. The crab trap floats were almost under water. Water in Turners bay was falling harder than I ever remember seeing it fall. I can't imagine what it must have been doing down at the washout.....did not go that far south.

By dark.....no tide movement in the ship channel.

Fishing.....I tried some of the reefs in Turners bay but could not get a bite on soft plastics. I tried fishing some of the birds but they were doing more flying and looking than actual feeding. I did catch 2 14" trout after the birds had left.

I spent several hours fishing many different area and some along the bank without even getting a bite. About 3 PM, I started heading back towards Turners bay. I found a flock of Gulls and Terns doing some feeding and caught 5 or 6 keeper trout and a few dinks.

I picked a few more Trout working different flocks of birds. When the sun started to get low in the sky......the fish got active. In the last hour of daylight.....I caught ~ 15 Trout. I switched to topwater the last 30 minutes and it was fun watching the trout strike the bait. I had 2 different "blow-ups" from big fish but they did not take the bait. I did catch about 5 trout on topwater in the 15" to 17" size. I should have started using topwater sooner.

Baites used.....caught all the Trout [and a couple of small Reds] on ....can you guess.....glow and char sand eel jr with a 1/4 oz lead jig and a bone color Spook.
