Default CVA .50 cal Muzzle loader sighting in

First time dealing with a black powder gun for me. Spent 3 hours at the range with a friend working on sighting in a Wolf CVA and I wasn't to impressed. What kind of groups with this type break open muzzle loader shot at 100 yards? After 50 yards we went to 100 and started cleaning barrel every shot. He had the white hots powder and a 240 power built bullets. I guess they are like most rifles that like some different brands of bullets and powder. One thing about these muzzle loaders there is no rapid fire. It shot about a 3" group is that normal or not?
Shot in a little 17 HMR Savage and that thing was a dream....tack driver too.
