If you are salary ,Go ahead and serve. That way your name is out of the pool for 2 or 3 years. if you don't get picked or don't serve your name goes right back on the list.

depending on the jurisdiction, you get anywhere from $10-$40/day. Meals? That depends on the jurisdiction as well. I've been to Parish Jury Duty 5 times, Federal, once. I missed once cuz I forgot. I called the clerks' office the next day when I realized I missed it. Said I had been in Houston for 4 days, got in this am, and found the notice on my desk. She said to just make a copy of the summons, and mail in a letter, no big deal.
I've been called into a pool twice. First time was an obviously alcoholic non-worker that had gotten drunk at a Saints game, then slipped/tripped on a wet, busted piece of concrete at a friend's apartment. 1st question his lawyer asked: "Would you be prejudiced against someone who had formerly filed injury suits and won monetary awards?" answer: "Why no, as long as the suits and injuries were legitimate and not frivolous attempts to make money." "Would you be prejudiced against someone who was on permanent disability?" "Not if the disability is legitimate, but Mr Couvillion here doesn't even need a cane to walk. I'm sure he could get some kind of job, even if it was just a WalMart greeter." I could see the Plaintiff's attys scribbling and knew I was safe. 2nd time I was in the pool selected, it was a criminal trial, mail carrier had been stealing Social Security checks. This was Fed Court. Question #1; "Do you have any relatives or close friends in law enforcement?" "Yes sir, 2 first cousins, and 2 second cousins." I was out, as was everyone else with LEOs in the family. My brother got to serve on a rape jury in Terrebonne Parish back in the '90s. They convicted a rapist and sent him to Angola for 18 years or so. |

Mine was a capital murder trial. On reporting everyone in the room had to fill out questionaire which took over 2 hour. Alot questions were do you believe in this or that, do you believe in the death penalty. Then the people that got picked would have to go to a hotel for the whole trial. The second I got out of the questionaire I went to parish where my wife family lives legally moving to that parish and changed my driver's license, vehicle registration, boat registration, and voters registration went to clerk of court of my new parish that day to have it certified. Then went back on Monday said I can't be on the trial due to I do not live in this parish anymore. They dropped me from the jury pool. You have to live in the parish for atleast 1 year before jury service which I wasn't serving yet just in the jury pool.
Lucky I did it due to the trail took 3 weeks and then they let the jury go home. Then sent them back to decide sentence. |
