yep, some bad stuff. I did a school project on it. Vibrio vulnificus. its the same thing that kills people from eating oysters, but when a cut or ***** from fish, crab, shrimp, etc happens it is a flesh eating bacteria. Definitely bad news. I was scared that I was gonna get it from that hardhead finning I took a few weeks back.

Good friend of mine got it on his a foot a couple years back in Lafitte. His plan was to fish 2 days. First day was fine and foot started hurting that night. Next day hurt so bad he could not stand it. He was an er nurse and went in. Almost lost his foot and has multiple surgeries. He was out of work for over a year as he could not walk. Its a very serious bacteria. My wife works at a hand surgical clinic and sees some nasty stuff. She has not seen vibrio in a while but she sees other stuff during the summer from shrimp and such with the heat. She gets so mad at me when I come home from fishing and sees a cut or something.

it is a bactiria that is in the water during the hot months. you don't have to get stuck while fishing or shrimping . You just have to be careful out there. |

I seen some pictures of this a few years ago.....the guy's hand was so bad they had to put "relief" cuts in his fingers and the top of his hand. I believe he lost a couple of fingers.....this case was also from shrimping.
If i remember correctly, the article said its worse in warm stagnant water. |

His said might have gotten started as he had a skeeter bite on his leg and they said the vibrio could have gotten in there. Also, they said hydrogen peroxide is useless against it, need bleach.
When I worked with Seatow after Katrina we carried bleach everyday to be safe. Lots of nasty stuff after that crap |

That Vibrio ain't nuttin to play wit. Get some bleach or an anti-biotic. Gotta watch it esp. this time of year.

Just checked my email... i sent this thread to my Dr to see what you could use for protection out on the water...
keep a big bottle of this in your boat.... I contains alcohol and if used right away will kill any kind of bacteria... It also is good to use after handling Trout...It will take the slim right off your hands and dry them fast( Just found this out) Every boat should have a bottle of Hand Sanitizer...Saltwater or Fresh... Word from the wise
