7mm-08 is the ticket. I own 5 of them. Me all 3 boys & wife shoot them. Just about all I use & have been shooting it since '91. Remington & Savage make youth models as does Ruger in the compact which is a little more pricey but something they can shoot forever & won't out grow.

I bought a .243 Howa bolt action when my son was 7 years old, he's now 13. He's killed several deer, every year since then without a problem. I've been really impressed with it and would highly recommend one.
