My brother in law bought his kids a savage .243 a few years ago and they have killed a few deer with it so far with no cripples. That things groups very well also, i was impressed. I saw a youth model browning .243 at G&H in gueydan the other day too. Not sure what your looking to spend but it was $600 i think
