It kinda depends on the application. Are you fishing grass or wood? And what are the predominate size fish in the area you are fishing. Meaning if your fishing the Calcasieu River the average size fish is somewhere around 2lbs which dictates a smaller (physical size) jig, but if you are at toledo you would be more apt to throw a larger (physical size) jig. I buy bulk skirt material and make my own colors so that Im not throwing a color that anyone can just buy at the store. But as a rule dark colors for muddy water and natural (pumkin, watermellon, pb&j) colors for clear water.

I normally use 1/2 oz in a color that resembles netbaits bamabug red, no rattle and a plastic trailer with color to match. If I want a slow fall (cooler water or muddy) i will use a trailer that is bulky with a lot of action (resistance). If I want a faster fall (clear or warm water) then I go with a trailer that has less resistance.

evolution jigs, you can't beat them. Flourocarbon brush guards, ridges to hold on trailor, and they fall and stand up on the bottom perfectly. I'd tell you my trailer, but I'm one of few who use it so I rather keep it a secret. But for black/blue jigs I like a sapphire color jig. Black/red or green/red jigs i usually throw watermelon red trailers with them. One trailer I don't mind mention is the paca craw trailers they are pretty neat and i hear the Y-not trailers are sweet too. O and usually just flip and pitch, I don't do the swimming jig thing, eventhough I'm sure its productive. |
