Sounds like the pin is missing from under the "Y" shaped bracket that holds the float in place inside the bowl. Not sure exactly what its called though.

Seriously it sounds like you didnt install the bowl gasket correctly or the carb is going into a flood stage. The brass screw you speak of should be for the fuel/air mix and one possiblt for the idle. I have never seen a screw to control fuel flow on those type carbs. If the needle or seat is bad it will flood or if you for got the float pin it will. Also make sure the float is in the rite side up . Its hard to correctly give the fix without seeing what is happening .

Float pin had the same issue with my generator... Bought rebuild kit and kept leaking from what looked like from the bowl... Bad float pin got stuck letting to much gas in and flooding out

if it isnt the needle valve it may be the float itself and you might have to adjust it. did you remove the float when you had it off the bike?

I have a Yamaha Big Bear that had carb problems and it was easier to buy a new carb rather than rebuild the old one. Bought a new one for like $110 from an online parts house. No adjustment just plug and play.
