I had it in Biglake a Friday in the wind and never was concerned. It handled the waves very good. My only complaint is the tunnel on the 48" bottom is wider than the tunnel on the 42" bottom and to me it doesn't run as shallow. That being said I know the boat is heavy with all the batteries in it. I'm fixing to reduce some weight in it and hopefully it'll improve some.

Hell I run 32 mph in my 16x42 all day long with one battery and an aluminum floor, ice chest and 6 gallons of gas but length does slow you down a lot. I didn't know that about the tunnel on the 48" boats, I don't like that .

I have had problems getting the boat proped right and I think part of it is the tunnel. That's just my uneducated opinion. Lol

Default Tunnel Hulls

Im also shooping for similar rig.

Southfork .80 gauge 18/42 Tunnel $2,500.

The 48" Southfork tunnels are .100 gauge, I didn't price that model.

The Southfork model i quoted had a "performance tunnel" not the deep tunnel, but they prob make deep tunnel.

I priced Alweld 18/44 and 20/44 La Model with deep tunnel this am, I believe price was around $2,700 and a little under $3,000.

I'm leaning heavy on the 20/44 Alweld with deep tunnel. I'm not too concerned with speed, and I would prefer not to run jack plate if possible.

What I would really like is a true flat bottom 19/50 Custom Tunnel but that's a little more $$$ than I'm wanting to spend.

Anybody have any 1st hand feedback on the performance tunnel vs deep tunnel?

Default Boaaaaaaats

One more thing, IMO if your pricing a Tunnel Hull and your getting up around $4,000 you might wanna think about a custom built boat or a good used custom built boat.

This is what I have. Running it with a 2 stroke yamy 25hp. Runs very shallow, start in water where boat is sitting on the mud in 3 inches of water. Also run an old southfork light weight 20/42 w/ a 25hp 2 stroke merc. This boat will go places the alweld can't.

No jackplate on either. I'll have to check on the prop....Prop Shop set up both boats years back.

I had a 1648 with a performance tunnel. It would not run without porpoising with my 40 merc. Lake Area bought it put a Tohatsu on it and it ran fine.

I just purchased a 16x42 southfork from Watercraft marine in Beaumont. It was $1900 cash. It wasn't a tunnel, although they did have some 18x42 tunnels in stock. Not sure what they have on wider boats. Very friendly people and $200 cheaper than our local dealer.

Well it's a pain to put in and out of gear and turn all the way. But I've also heard that tunnels run better with the motor closer to the tunnel.

When you put the motor on a jackplate with a tunnel you loose the cone of water coming out the tunnel. Creates alot of prop slip. Defeats the whole purpose of a tunnel. Some people will extend the tunnel with a jackplate but I don't see the need for it.

Bingo, the water does not stay focused to the area of the prop once it leaves the tunnel so the farther back from the transom/tunnel the less water to your water pump and prop so less to grab hence the prop slip.
