As far as what weight rod to use for catching Red's.......
This is probably more of personal preference than what weight rod is better. Some like a Med-heavy, but I only use med-light rods. I alway keep my drag set fairly light. A 2.5 lb Trout can usually strip drag. I have caught 25 lb Reds on my med-light rods with no problems.
