![]() After a long hiatus from saltwater fishing I thought it was time to go try some of my honey holes.....Being that they are in the shallow marsh I usually start catching the Red fish pretty good in Late April-August. On the fight card was my good fishing buddy who can not swim and my sister who is a super trooper, I will explain the super trooper thing later. The wind forecast looked good enough, ENE winds about 6-8 knots in the morning, switching to SE at 10-12 knots in the afternoon. Good enough to allow me to get to my spots. We start out toward Rockefeller only to run into immediate trouble when a vehicle in front of a line of 20 vehicles on Hwy. 13 is doing 30 mph. The vehicle behind the slow one is a big old rig with a trailer....he's not passing. To top it off it is foggy. Long story short we follow these goombas for about 10 miles till they get to the T and go left. We were making good time again when all of a sudden on Hwy. 82 a vehicle in front of us is wanting to pull off of the hwy......Only thing is he can't figure where he wants to pull off, so we go through the tap the brake lights and vary your speed from 15-35 mph thing for about 2 miles! It was torturous. Not a big deal, I am patient. We launch the boat (no catastrophe here) and are on our way to catch some bait. We get to the bait spot and I don't see much, but I've got to try right. First cast with the cast net catches a 3 foot gar which proceeded to thrash and tear a human head sized hole in my net! No big deal, still can catch bait. Catch about 2 dozen mullets and off to the hole. Get to the hole. Tide is up all the way. The entrance to my hole is almost completely silted up! I skid the boat over a sandbar and make it into the cut. This cut was wide open last summer, but it is not going to last long. Immediately when I entered the cut I noticed the lack of fish....I mean nothing. No bait fish, no big head wakes from reds, maybe a few Garfish, thats it! Long story short back here, we fish for 2 hours, covering about 2 miles and nada! Well, no big deal I've got other spots. We head back out to another cut and proceed to look. We were in a long and winding cut as we were coming up to a bend I notice a bay boat come flying around a curve on the left side of the canal....I shut it down and immediately move to the right, (Road rules), this guy tries to go his left at the same time, while on half plane! As we pass within 10' of each other he is smiling......Thank God we didn't collide. Wheewwwweee! After this experience we continue to scour over 3-5 square miles of marsh for reds only to avail nothing! I was at my wit's end with the reds, so we decided to salvage the trip by catching some crabs. We found a weir and starting catching some crabs. We caught about 5 dozen and figured that was enough, that it was time to head home. Here we go! While we were crabbing I had left my boat floating on one side of the weir, while we crabbed the other. Well, I get back to my boat and there is a good bit of water in the motor well.....hmmmm, wonder how that got there. After I re-rigged my bilge (Automatic float switch type) and removed the water we were on our way. By this time it was about 1:00 and the wind was blowing pretty good (13 knots out of the ESE). I knew a back way, through the marsh to get to the launch, but I figured we would do fine in the gulf. Done it with ease plenty of times. When we get to the gulf the waves have gotten steep and close together....we only have a couple of miles to the entrance of the boat launch canal, so no big deal. We are moving right along when I look back at the motor well and my battery is almost floating.....Holy! Immediately I tell my sister and buddy to get on the left side of the boat, since I was quartering waves and they were coming in from right to left. As we moved a little weight to the left water came gushing in from the left side of the boat.....In the blink of an eye I was standing in water. The drivers console was about 5 foot up from the back of the boat, so that gives you an idea how much water was in the back. I hollered at my buddies. "Get to the front".....They both urgently ran to the front, my sister on the deck and my buddy right behind the deck. I had no choice but to throttle up to keep the back of the boat from submerging. This is where the waves started beating the Tar out of my buddy and sister. I was moving a flat bottom boat 30 mph in a steady 3 foot stacked wave chop in the gulf! Every wave that we jumped my sister and buddy were bouncing in the air, but I had to keep that boat horizontal or it was all over........Within about 3 minutes I was ankle deep in water, I dared to look back at the motor well fearing I might turn to salt, only to find the battery and the gas tank floating and the top of boat even with the waterline! We made it to a calm cove not a minute later........ Wow.......that was heavy. First thing my sister says...."Chris, I think I broke my elbow". We looked at her elbow and it was already the size of a Softball. I wanted to die for putting my sister and buddy through that. The bigger problem was to bail the water though, as the floor was now completely filled with it. Oh yeah, the bilge was running the whole time while this was happening. Couldn't keep up. Luckily we were at a spot where we could go through the marsh to make it to the boat launch. I got my buddy to come towards the back of the boat and plane it off while I pulled the plug. After about 30 minutes of running on plane while bailing we got all the water out and we were almost at the boat launch. The boat had a huuuggggeeee gushing hole though. I figure water was coming in at least as fast as it was leaving through the plug hole in the transom! When we got to the launch we had not a minute to spare before this boat was going to sink. I dropped my buddy and sister off at the launch, my buddy cranked the truck and backed the trailer down......by the time I got the boat on the trailer I was ankle deep again. He pulled the boat and trailer out of the drink and the horrific experience was over. We could now breathe. We didn't talk much on the truck ride home, it was only me apologizing and saying I will pay the doctor's bills. On our way back the toneau cover on my truck peeled open and a couple of my fishing buckets flew out of the bed. We just laughed. Hope ya'll had a better weekend. Edit: My motor got clogged with silt and stopped peeing, so I had to remove the cowling. I also had to remove the tell tale hose on my motor to blow out the debris. Without thinking, I removed the hose and the piece of plastic (re-stricter) which joins the cowling to the hose fell in the water. It goes on and on. |

We also sank my uncles boat at Rockefeller on the beach. After the first wave came over the side it was all over. Nothing we could do.

My Brother was fishing at the mouth of the Mississippi river. He was in a small boat that tipped over and naturally lost all his stuff including his wallet. This was bad but the wierdest part was that a month after it happened a shrimper in the gulf of Mexico was dragging for shrimp and found his wallet/credit cards in his wallet. Naturally no money was found in the wallet.

My grand paw was trolling by the Mouth of the Mississppi river and fell over board, some kind of way he ended up catching one of the towlines and pulled himself all the way back up to the boat. When he got back on the boat he turned to my Uncle who was deckhanding for him and asked if anything fell overboard. He never noticed him falling.

When I was about 16 I straightend a curve and stuck an old heavy fiberglass hull about 40 yards into the marsh right at sun down...I was by myself. I did not get the boat back into water deep enough for it to float until around 10:00 that night. The mosquitoes trained me well for several hours. Lessons learned, Always bring OFF and make sure you know where the channel is.

Recently me and BassYakr were going after some trout on a Monday evening in prien, the bite wasn't there like the day before so we tried fishing some lights on the way in. Sat around a while catchin one here and there then we hear tires screaming and a loud bang and crunch. I could tell there was a bad accident not too far from us. Turns out a f150 smoked a car at the country club x big lake rd intersection.

When I was twelve I went fishing with my dad and my best friend in Dubission Lake north of Washington La. When we were done fishing we went back to the boat ramp to load the boat on the trailer and my dad tells me don't go whip donuts. Well low and behold I didn't listen and I ended up ejected from a 15 ft alumacraft with a 30 hp Johnson doing circles around me in the middle of the lake. I had to wait until boat passed me up and then swim out of its path. After treading water for almost 15 minutes a Good Samaritan finally came and plucked me from the water. Then I had to go to the boat launch and explain to my dad I had done what he told me not to do. I waited for the scalding but I never got as I guess he was just happy I didn't get hurt. About thirty minutes later two other guys realized there was a boat doing donuts with no one in it and rammed their boat into it and hopped I and brought the boat back to us at the landing.

You know it is going to be a good day of fishing when your brother throws the truck keys to you when you are not looking and all you hear is them hit the back deck of the boat and fall in the water.
You know it's is a even better day of fishing when you call your wife and tell her what happened and she has to drive 4 hours to Vinice To bring the other set of truck keys. Even better day the following day is your 5 anniversary She tried to convince me that she could overnight them to me. It was Saturday. FedEx does not deliver on Sunday |

I can promise you swimming with a boat going around you in circles at about 25 mph is not fun. Especially without a PFD on. Guys I can say use your kill switches. This was back on a 85 model and it didn't have one. I know we all say it won't happen to us but it does.

After a night of spirits and an early day on the lake fishing about 50 yards off the bank I feel a rumble in my belly, trolling motor goes to 5 and heading straight to the bank...Sweat beads running down my face and I am at 30 yards, I close to 20 and start unbuckling my belt...at 15 I don't think there is a chance in hell...AINT GONNA MAKE IT...at 10 and ready to jump....so feaking close may *** is dripping with sweat...BAMMM, HIT A FREAKIN STUMP...off I go, 5 ft of water yards from the bank, 3 steps on land and pop squat....RELIEF, finally, put on a slicker suit and went to the house...

Fishing at the Worm last summer, I had caught a small catfish and I was going to take him off my line when he shook free and dropped. I was sitting down wearing short pants. When he fell he stuck me in my knee. Not just stuck, I mean he was attached to my leg by his side fin... wiggling. The fin went in about 1” under my kneecap. I had to rip him out. The next 30 minutes was the most pain I think I have ever felt in my life. I could feel the poison traveling up my leg. I had to lay down in the boat because I thought I was going to pass out. I woke up the next morning and could barely stand.
Three days went by and the knee only got bigger. Ended up having to get on antibiotics for 2 weeks. |

Here is a west coast nightmare for you.
Was commercial fishing on a drag boat many years ago. We must have got him when we were dropping the trawl but we got a 1000 lb bull sea lion in the bag and dragged him around for 12 hours at 600 fathoms. There his 40 percent fat carcass started to aneroebically decompose immediately. We found him in the bag and usually it is no big deal. Hook him up wit the deck boom and swing him out of the bag, fill out the paperwork and report him to NOAA. The deck boom broke. Nice sunny day and 1200 lbs of dead seal meat sitting on the deck rapidly ruining 20,000 lbs of sablefish. But we came up with a solution. We keep a chainsaw on the boat for cutting up snag logs that get caught up in the net. I pitchforked, puked and almost died but in no more than three of four hours we had that 1800 lb sea lion out of the net and the deck cleared. I just went and puked a bit as I wrote this up. |

You shovel you some rotted sea lion sludge out of a pitching boat after being up for 14 hours and see if it dont grow! lol!
A few years back took the family to the beach off the Lost Coast and my dog found a long expired Sea lion and rolled in the greasy mess. If momma had'nt been along I would shot him. I dry heaved the whole way home with my head hanging out of the window, kids screaming and crying, eyes watering. If I had known she was going to divorce me I would have shot him. The smell is a combination of roadkill and that one fish that fell behind the seat in the boat and sat out all weekend, indescribable. |

My wife was chewing on me because I never let her throw the good rods so I hand her a brand new Curado/Crucial combo to quiet her down and I go back to fishing. About two whole minutes later i hear a strange splash and think No Way. I turn around and shes standing there empty handed with an oh ***** look on her face. 30 ft of water it was gone.

My uncle had to work one weekend and let us (my uncles step-son, my brother, and me) hunt his blind without him. The boat launch was very narrow and made a straight drop on the sides, so we made his step-son back the boat in. Sure enough, he jackknifes the damn trailer of the side of the ramp and the boat and everything goes underwater! When he went to pull up, my truck would only spin. We hooked his truck up to mine and pulled it out, but in doing so put large rocks through the grill of my truck breaking pieces off of it and cracking my windshield. Everything was still in the boat except for my uncle's robo-duck. We decided to head to the blind and look for it when we get back. We didn't shoot a damn thing that morning and all the liquor the night before gave me the $h!ts in the blind where we had no toilet parer! I still thank my brother today for giving me his socks. Brotherly love at it's best!! Anyways, we get back to the launch and probe with the push pole for about 20 minutes and found the robo-duck. A little water and PB Blaster had it working better than ever. Needless to say, we weren't allowed to use my uncle's boat again.
