That's tough situation. Just have to be very careful with barrels that short. I would look for an auto 28gauge and leave a longer barrel. The barrel length shouldn't be as much of an issue as the stock length. I'd cut the stock down to make sure it fits him, and worry about the barrel after that. 410's are a joke like you said.
