Add a tube about six inches behind the foot fest bar that runs parallel to the step. Weld the plate in between the step and the newly added tube. make sense?

I think its a lot easier if they just add a bent lip on the back end of the aluminum plate so it acts as a support from bending at the same time without the need to add another bar.

a bent lip is like adding an angle iron to it and it will be plenty strong unless you jump on it.

True, but I wouldn't want to rake the bottom of the lip on my calf or a kids leg when the rest is flipped up - put a slit rubber hose over it and call it a day

Make 2 bends. One going down 1-1/2" or 2". Whatever the diameter of the pipe is, and another one going back underneath the plate about an inch. Strengthens it up as well. Definitely go with a material like seadek or hydroturf on it to keep it cool if your little girl likes to stand on it. Kids always seem to loose their shoes. At least mine does!
