![]() I've been doing a fair amount lately. I have an issue. The last 15 I've hooked I might have landed 4. I can't figure out what's the deal. All fish hooked on gold spoons and H&H Spinners. The reds just spit the hook mid fight. Not by the boat and not popping the line. Just coming off the hook. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks |

Maybe check the tip of the hook...... it might not be sharp or could be bent..
I very seldom loose a Red after it is hooked...... and I don't really "set" the hook when I get a bite. |

Most of the hooks on those spoons aren't very sharp

i have seen where a red smashes your bait and you start fighting him only to realize you never set the hook. That red will hold that bait and fight you for a while even though you haven't set it. if you not sure if he's hooked, set it again.

I've seen redfish knock a lure out of another redfish' mouth. More often than not on crabkbaits.

Redfish, bees, and dogs can smell fear. They hear it too. It's the sound of them pulling drag. I don't like to give them their head in a fight so I tighten my drag all the way down and use 65 lb power pro. Yeah you may snap a rod or two but Academy has a pretty good return policy. So pretty much the entire dance with the fish is one continual hook set. The hook on a spoon won't allow it but you can change the gig head on a spinner bait. You also have to bend the spinner bait back in to shape after you catch one with an attitude. If the fight goes longer than 30 seconds, I have found the fishes chances of winning increase exponentially. I don't like to lose, especially to a big nasty.
