This past Saturday May 15th the Cabela's Speckled Trout USA Tournament Trail held a 2-day event at the City of Orange Boat Ramp in Orange, Texas where anglers from as far away as New Hampshire competed for a large payback in the first event of the year. Taking first place Brian Frederick of Lumberton, Texas and Gary McElduff of Nederland, Texas with a total weight of 33.47 pounds and earning $3,500.00. Brian and Gary were fishing south of Sabine Lake on Day 1 and moved towards the north of Sabine on day 2. The magic colors were dark grey and chrome with a green back. The team said fishing was tough and that they caught 17 fish during the event. They also weighed in all 10 fish alive for a total of a 2lb bonus for the two days helping them win the event by nearly 5lbs! In second place was the Orange, Texas team of Adam Jaynes and Aaron Hommel weighing in 28.58 pounds and earning $2,000.00. Adam and Aaron were fishing the south end of Sabine Lake catching over 100 fish on day 2 of the competition, jumping them from 6th place on day 1 to 2nd place at the end of day 2. Third place went to Tom Selman of Groves, Texas and James Sparrow of Port Neches, Texas with a weight of 28.39 and earning $1,000.00. Tom and James were fishing near LNG and was the only team to weigh in a fish over 25 inches earning them big Trout of the event honors and receiving a $500.00 Cabela's gift certificate. Taking big Redfish of the event was the team of Jeremy Waltrip of Jennings, Louisiana and Josh Lincecum of Sulphur, Louisiana with a 8.65 pound Redfish. The team caught the big redfish on the lower end of Big Lake on a Jerk Jr. The big Redfish was actually caught by the third partner of the team 12 year old Braydon Wood who landed the big Redfish. The team earned $500.00 for big Redfish of the event. "Four states were represented (Texas, Louisiana, Michigan, and New Hampshire). Anglers have been dealing with awful conditions the past several weeks with high winds making it impossible to stay on fish consistently, and rains hammered the area on Day 1 of the competition but moved out and created a hot but pleasant day 2 as temps reached the low 90's", said Tabor.
