One thing to add to the great report..........if the artifical baits are not working..... try some market shrimp of use a cast net to get some live bait. You should be able to catch some Redfish using some kind of bait.

Note: Do not Cast net on the Sabine Refuge property from the dock or bank. Cast netting is only allowed if you are in a boat.

Good tip, thanks.

I was planning to cast net some shrimp. Last time I was down there, I remember getting em out of the ditches right off the side of the road. Is that still do-able?

Sure..... but don't get caught. Probably cost you a "C" note or better.

They just changed this cast netting rule a couple of weeks ago due to the "extream" trash some / most of the people were leaving while cast netting.

I have been down to johnson bayou beach before and thrown some big mullet chunks on some big reels. The bite is slow but if something picks it up you better hang on. Giant bull reds and big gar fish. Might wanna set up a few rigs in a rod holder that you can keep an eye on while you throw for spec.

if you come in june, bring your heavy gear too. you can catch tons of sharks. just cast net for some big mullet early in the morning. i've found using the mullet that were too small to cut, but too big to use with light tackle, the best for the sharks. i cut a slit in the belly to get extra smell going.

So cast netting the ditches along the road is a no no, even if you not on the Reserve?

No cast netting from a dock or along any bank only applies while on Sabine Refuge.

Cast netting from a boat is allowed in Sabine NR.

It is a Conoco station with a lil tackle store about 200 yards southeast of A+ Motel.

You can camp on Mae's Beach and Holly Beach. Lots of people do.
Mae's Beach is a lot more quiet. Holly Beach can be a rat race on weekends.
You will find tents all along the beaches on weekends.
