I tried to get him use to a spinning reel but he gets aggravated too easy. Trying to keep it as simple as possible so he focuses on fishing not the reel.

The old red and black Abu Garcia is a great reel that will endure the salt. My mom still has hers after a number of years. She has used it wading and it stays working fine w/ a little cleaning. She'll still wade the surf if it's calm enough.

well, in SPINCAST REELS.. the daiwa gold cast 100 and 120 series reels are anodized for sw use, hold up well and run about $50. the abumatic reels dont do as well and cost $50 and up. zebco 808sw and 888sw arent too bad for the price, selling for $30-$40. the problem with most spincast reels is the slow retrieve ratio. like the zebco has a 2.8:1!

Check out the Zebco Omega's. These are unbelievably smooth and durable and are no comparison to the original Zebco's. Aircraft aluminum frame and all metal gears. Tough to beat. Prolly wouldn't hold up to a redfish though???
