I think they should replace what they lose/break. No question!

I would make anyone who isn't bringing their own gear rent mine. Seems fair enough. If ya don't do that and gear breaks, that's a gray area that's very easy for a client to argue. If they lose it, its a whole different deal.
Rent it out so, when these things come about, at least you have been getting a return on your investments. Just my opinion. |

Cost of business my friend, let it go . If dude smacked it on the hull out of anger then yes he bought it, but accidents happen and why in hell did u let a client use a 400$ combo?

Jared, when I was guiding, I put "floaties" on the spinning tackle my customers used.
They did not use my baitcasting stuff unless I knew them well. |

Simple do like the Big Guide outfits....Charge for every rod used
Don't ever let them use a $400 rod combo...that's the 1st mistake But simple all star or Falcon rods with a cheaper shimano reel... Have a bunch of spin cast.... That way if you have 4 rods rented that day...its $60 bucks....and if you go 3 trips with out losing or braking one your good....and if they lose one its covered I don't let my wife use my rod and reels Waterloo + core set ups =700 |

You breaky, you buy. I dont have anything worth allot to many people but worth allot to me so no one uses my stuff unless they can replace, I have talked to friends that go on guided trips and they say they only rent inexpensive spin cast or you can bring your own nice stuff.

I think normal wear and tear, including rod breakage, would be on you and covered under the trip. Now losing a rod/reel is a different story and wouldn't constitute "normal"…so yeah, they should pay.

dont rent the rod and reels, if they use your rod and reels make them pay a deposit up front. If they grab your rod and reel without permission and lose it, he definately pays or swims back to the dock!!! I believe if you rent a rod and reel you will lose clients, if you charge a deposit they will bring thier own or know where they stand if they lose it.

Tough situation. You may have made a good call but I guarantee that nobody on that boat will ever use your service again and they will bad mouth you to everyone they know and tell them not to use you either. Maybe should have bit the bullet, you still have a business to run.

Just and FYI, renting rods to clients is very common. Most guides carry 3 or 4 spinning combos just for this reason.
When I was guiding, I bought 4 Shimano spinning combos from Academy for about $40. Charged $10 a day rental. Paid for themselves in about 3 weeks. |
