Until the river rises to over 16ft you'll have to pull over the dam. You gonna need a very lite boat to pull over along with a strong fishing buddy. Fishing at this time of the year can be off the charts for bass and sacs. Drift the stumps with crawfish crank baits. You can fish in there for 3 hours without a strike, then all of a sudden all hell will break loose.

I would take the river all the way around instead of taking the west route. Sandbars, trees and flats will block the way most times. The lillies can be a major problem when you go to pull over...bring a long handle rake to open path to the pullover....good luck!

No. i don't think ya gonna pull that over! However, watch the river stage at Butte Larose; when it goes above 16ft plus you can drive on in! Fishing still can be great with the river rising, water will be muddy up front but much better toward the back....

Better make it 17 foot a butte la rose with a bass boat....you will still drag the dam at 16. Good friend of mines parents had a camp on cow island. Before they sold it we use to go back there when the river was low and hammer the bass n sacalait with the lake to ourself. Just like every other part of the basin.....be prepared to fight the grass and lillys. Weedless baits like flukes and senkos are your best bet. The pipeline that runs north and south is a good place to fish.

Has the rock dam been rebuilt.

20 years ago.... I could get into Cow Island lake with my 14' foot Al boat [20 hp] when the river was above 14.5'. I think I did quickly lift the motor to get over the rocks. At 15', I think I was ok to get in the lake.

The dam is the only way to get a boat into the lake.

I've heard of people with winches mounted on the front of their boats to pull them over land to the right of the dam when it was too low.
