I just bought a new setup for going after gills. It is a Shakespeare combo, I believe the rod is 4'6" and it has an ultralight reel. It has four-pound test line on it.

I use a JD Courtney jigging pole. The line runs thru the rod so no guides.
Super light, sensitive, and plenty of back bone. Its a 9ft Fish Eagle Traditional 8wt fly rod blank that has been wrapped and glassed every foot for depth measurement. It has a B&M west point crappie reel. I have use the B&M Fish Pole rig and its no match for the JD custom. You can pull them out of tight cover with out getting hung. |

For casting, I like a 6 foot light rod and a little spinning reel, you can get a ultralight reel for $19.99 and a rod for $19.99 at Academy. I bought one the other day it was a Berkeley rod and you can cast a mile with it. I use 6 lb test P-Line.
I have a custom jigpole, I like a 12' jigpole with a cheapo plastic reel as they are just there to hold line basically, prefer one with a reel seat on the very end like a flyrod just for balance. You can get some good jigpoles at Academy as well and they start at ~ $30. The lighter the jigpole, the more expensive they get. |
