Default mercury 40 tilt assist

Friends tilt assist no longer works on merc 40hp. If took the assist off of motor how hard is it to tilt manually. Because right now he cant hardly lift it. A new is a $1000. Is it necessary to have that part to tilt up in the marsh.

I've got the lift assist and it is starting to freeze up. I'm gonna have it rebuilt if the boat doesn't sell soon...Of course I only noticed this failure AFTER putting it up for sale! UGH!

I did for about a year. My trim motor housing rusted out and water got in the motor shorting it out. I took the trim unit off and set it with the pins like any other outboard. I used it in the marsh and had to clear it sometimes and the length of the tiller was just right to almost hit my bench seat when I would slam down on it to kick the motor up. It was too much of a pain in the rear to clear it like that so I just grabbed the back of the cowling to help it a little.

Default no

not a merc but i did have the same issue on a 40 evinrude, drilled out the bleeder so that it would move freely, the tilt assist still needs to be there to keep your motor from tilting to far in to your transome, and with it moving freely it wasn't that hard to pull up and if you hit something the motor would just bounce up, of course you won't be pulling it up while it is in gear, and you will loose almost all of your reverse power, find you a cmc jack plate, having trim sure is nice even on the smaller motors
