Default 10/17 Big Lake

Took a longtime friend of the family's down south to the jetties area to try for some flounder and to see if we couldn't get him on a Big Bull Red using some of the techniques that Mathgeek shared on the forum.

Tried to get some fresh crab from crabman & the other bait place in cameron. No go, no one had any. Bought some chicken necks in hopes that we could pick some crabs while we anchored up floundering. Nothing.... So ended up switching to just floundering for a while...

The flounder bite was fairly slow but we did manage to eke out 6 nice sized flouder. Tide was starting to move back out then, so we decided to see if we could get some bait for the bulls again. Cast net for a bit... got a few finger shad... but not much. Stopped back at crab mans and bought some frozen finger mullet to use as well.

Went to the jetties, and started fishing for the reds. We caught a lot of hardheads and a few whiting. But finally got a good bite, My buddy just caught his first ever bull. It went about 33 inches. He was absolutely over the moon, The fish made 4-5 nice runs.

About another 1/2 hour of catching hardhead, and i had another takedown.. At first did not think it was a very nice fish... but when it saw the boat it took of on the first of at least 9 or 10 good runs. We finally boated him after a tense 15 minute battle.

He taped out this morning from chin to tip of tail at 40 3/4 inches... best red for me by far.

Thanks Mathgeek for giving the heads up on how to target these guys at the jetties, It's an experience that my friend is saying he will never forget.

Here's a picture of my Buddy with the fish, and my little girl looking on! What a bruiser!
