I have been shooting a rem. 270 with 130 gr. remington core-lokt. It is like some of yall said shot placement is the key to dropping them in their tracks. When you shoot a deer through the rib cage the bullet passes right through and most of the time the deer will run. I have learned that a shoulder shot will drop them dead because they absorb all of the shock and energy from the bullet because it hits bone unlike passing through the ribcage. Yes you will lose more meat but when it is a big buck i would rather lose some meat and watch the deer drop than see it run off and maybe never find it. That really sucks, i know from experience. 4 years ago i shot a nice 8 point in west bay through the ribs (lung shot) and it ran off leaving a good blood trail for about fifty yards then nothing. Never found him. Since then i have not had one take a step after a shoulder shot. Thats my opinion!!!!!!!!! Almost forgot about the does i just try to head shoot them. Heres an example. .

Neck, head, chest or shoulder shots are good.
I never had an issue with losing meat either. Holding your gun still is an issue, especially if it is cold. You have to be able to be calm and pull the trigger between exhale and inhale. Don't hold your breath. |

I've killed a deer with .22lr. Head shot, went in the eye and never came out. Deer dropped right where she was standing.

It looks like some PVC fittings with washers and steel wool inside, wrapped with rubber tape and then with electrical tape.... I dunno tho, thats just what it looks like ![]() I also "heard" that the sound of the bullet hitting the deer is louder than the gun going off.. |

I have been using a bolt action .243 as my weapon of choice for 26 years. I have actually lost count of how many deer have been shot with it. I have placed shots on deer from 20 yards to 200 + yards over the 26 years. I will admit I have had several deer lost after hitting the ground then getting up and running off. One recent loss was a shot taken at 30 yards, the deer hit the ground like a sledge hammer hit it, after several minutes the deer scrambled up and got away. I applied that loss to a bad shot placement and me making noise which alerted the deer to scramble. Shot placement is very important. I also believe that a factor in a deer running off is the deers will to live. If a deers adrenaline is high, that deer can run with a bullet through the heart for a long distance. I have noticed that, when a properly placed shot on a deer that is more calm feeding or walking tends to drop in place or go a short distance and lays down.

No huntin fool that was not your shot placement that led to her running off. That doe was scared of what that buck was going to do to her if she laid there much longer. ![]() ![]() |
