My last chocolate I had would pick up a couple of birds at a time sometimes, but I think that was cuz she was a lil on the lazy side, and didn't want to hafta swim across the pond again.lol My silver I have now ( aka mutt, half-breed, Heinz 57 etc) picked up her first ducks a couple of weeks ago. She is no where near even half trained, but she seems to have a good nose. I went and got her after the hunt and we walked around in the pond together. She found 4 ducks that I couldn't find. I was pretty happy with just that.

I know if you want a well trained dog contact Ken Vidrine in Opelousas, amazing what he does with a dog. He is straight forward and you get what you pay for. No I am not Ken but he did very well with my pup. 351-1538

Had a chocolate lab show up at my blind at shooting time Saturday. Laid down next to the blind and went picked up all our birds. Left him there after the hunt. Didn't have to throw one rock.

Google "Rock Dog Trainers" and post how many and location of kennel. Failing to use a qualified trainer is like kicking Mike Tellich out the bid process for your new 10,000 sq FT house in favor of Jaun Valdez and Julio Jimenez carpentry.

For the first time EVER, I agree with w. What makes a "qualified trainer" a "qualified trainer"? Self declaration? Is there a trainer qualification school out there?

According to the AKC the only qualification that is needed to be a professional retriever trainer is that you receive money or goods to train a dog. Some people supplement their hunting expenses and train 1 or 2 gun dogs part time for local hunters and some people get neck deep into it and have 20+ dogs and travel all over the country running trials and training full time.
