Default Let's talk Tarpon reels... big tarpon

Spent many years chasing tarpon in Florida.
There were some areas that the really big girls would inhabit.

I all ways depended on my CTE 700's, Tld 25's or big Thunnus spinners(I like the baitrunner feature).

A close friend of mine recently asked what reels should he buy for fishing the Golden Triangle. I told him what I've used, but was curious about the reels you fellers think would handle some of the truly giant tarpon.

What are to "go to" reels in SW Louisiana?

That shimano Tranx is pretty awesome.
Line capacity could be a issue.

TRQS9B Penn. I have used these for sailfish, white marlin. I have never caught a tarpon, but then again I have never targeted them either. But my buddies that do fish for them have told me that the Penn is an awesome set-up. If you do not want to spend that kind of money then you can go with the SSV8500 or 9500 which is what I own.

The charter boat I was a deck hand on used the Torque series, I do not have that type of money so I stay with the spinfisher series.

Good luck

I just bought a Penn Spinfisher just for this. I have it spooled up with 35" yards of 50# power pro. I like the bait runner feature as well.

Anyone tried the new Quantum Cabo 80 Bait Teaser.BST80PTs
Looks interesting. Good line capacity and one heck of a drag.
