That's probably the best bang for your buck, unless you want to get into the $100+ knives. |

I've got a Hamilton Beach that I use for carving around the house, but I don't think they come with fillet knife blades. You'll need those if you ever use it on redfish. For trout, if you get a decent regular knife (RADA, Dexter, etc.), it will be easier to sharpen and you'll eventually find that you're just as fast with it. Most of the guides I know don't use electric since their just as fast with their blades.

American Angler makes a good one, its a little more expensive than the walmart and academy knives, but mine has lasted a long time and cleaned a lot of fish, even used it on smaller offshore species like blackfin, cobia, and snapper.

If your buying your electric knives in the sporting goods section your getting robbed.
Use the Hamilton Beach knives out of the housewares section. It is about the only thing I will purchase form Wal-Mart since they funded the federal red snapper law suit with a 9 million dollar donation. They do have the plastic gears and will wear out but they are a lot cheeper. Many purchase a pair of the MIster Twister blades to put in them to clean red fish because those blades are a lot more aggressive. If you are catching a lot of reds do what I did years ago and has become popular. Purchase one of the small, one handed reciprocating saws and modify a Dexter Russell blade for it. There is actually a guy in Mississippi that is making the serrated blades for the saws now. |
