Crabs
next time you go fishing, maybe you can catch some crabs, I told her I had a roommate in college that "caught crabs" and I want nothing to do with it!! that didn't go over to well.......... She was meaning crabs to bring home to boil and eat I have never been crabbin, is this something that can be done in the BL area? maybe go set up a crab pot, go fishing for the day, come back at days end and haul'em in? How would I go about catching crabs Im headed to LWF site to read up on rules |

as a recreation crabber you can have up to 10 traps but personally I think this is just overkill and people raise them on you, commercials in the area cut your floats or steal them thinking you are encroaching on "their" spots so its best to just stick to set nets for crabbing and if you plan to do it often and have freezer space, buy a case of chicken necks (they cost about $10) because buying small packs of necks or wings will costs you that same $10 just get a dozen or two for one trip where buying the case gets you about 150 of them.
others can help you with where to go in your area. if you want to crab on a regular basis and are a crab lover like me you might want to look at this: |

To keep it simple and cheap..... yes you can catch crabs in the Big Lake area.
I would not recommend buying nets.... yes the work but tying some chicken or trout head on a string works well using a dip net to "catch" the crabs. Nets take up lots of space and are messy to use. Be sure to click on the "LINK" under the last picture for more information. |

Last summer I had some nice people give me a nice size piece of beef melt before they left. I had never used beef melt, but always hear people having good results, so I tried it. I use it for 30+ minutes and don't remember catching any crabs on it, while I did catch a few on trout heads. It was a fairly slow day. Chicken works very good as bait, but trout heads are FREE. |

Growing up in the Lake Tahoe area, we use to catch crawfish like this, on a string. We would use beef liver, tied to a 6ft string, throw out about 10 of them in a row from the shore line near a pile of rocks. By the time you slowly pulled in the last line, the first was good and soaked with a crawfish on it, and you just repeated till you had enough or got bored (you know how it is when your a kid)
We called them blues up there, not bugs, for the the simple reason, up in the mountain's they were BLUE CRAFISH |
