Johnson 15hp (198something)
Are there some resources (old manuals) I should look for online or anything? New to (actually trying to take care of) outboard motors, so any advice will be appreciated, no matter how basic it may seem. Thanks. |

First off....... get a couple of propeller shear pins. If the prop hits something, the shear pin will break. Need to have some pliers or wrench to take the prop off. Probably will also need a screwdriver to take pin out. To get the broken shear pin out.... you may need a small nail or piece of wire to "punch" out the broken piece.
If you have a trolling motor..... same equipment is need [but correct size shear pin] If it has a built in pull cord to start the engine.......this cord will break at some time. I would keep a spare rope in the boat and look into how to remove the engine cover to get access to the flywheel where the spare rope can be used. Keep a paddle in the boat..... that can get you back to the landing. |

i've got the same motor on a 14'x48" Lowes. i live on the edge of a marsh and mainly use it there. great engine, and it pushes the boat pretty good with 2 people in it. i got an old manual jackplate and modified it so i can raise and lower it with a cheater bar type thing and pin it at different heights. really helps when bumpimg around in shallow water. like said above, extra pin and rope and a zip loc baggie with a few tools.
