You have to get the technique down right so that you properly "load" the rod when casting it. There are many youtube video's on the subject, I prefer to use what i call the "easy cast" which assist's greatly in loading the rod, a second option that works pretty well is the pendulum cast. I may not always agree with Mathgeek on everything but he's not blowing smoke up you rear end... (hmmmm wonder what kind of smoke he would be blowing if he was.. ) |

I use a 12 footer and would love to learn how to cast baits 100 yards. Using 2 or 4 ounces, I am good to get it 50 foot. I can cast 1/4 oz jig heads nearly as far with my 7 ft shimano.
I am not doubting it in anyway I would just like to see it. That would help keep my feet dry. |

You absolutely want to spool your reel with a good quality braid, Using mono of a sufficient size to deal with big reds and black drum is going to affect the castability a lot.... either 30lb or 50lb power pro would be good lines to use. you want 4-6 ounces with a 12 foot rod (start with 4), you want to leave about 4-5 foot of line hanging from the tip of your rod down to the weight... the lay it down like in this video and graphic... and then cast it like in the second video.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4VRCTVm-LxY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f12rBB-mgDU |

Yah I am using a spinning reel with... 50lb braid. Was slinging 5 oz today plus a blue crab and maybe got 60 foot. I don't get much practice though. |

I plan on going this sunday and using my kayak to put my bait out. Where is the best spot in Holly Beach to fish for the bulls?

you need some practice.. its easily doable, even with an open face reel. keep on keeping on and youll get it. just remember its all about centrifugal force so keep everything smooth! youll do just fine!

We usually fish on the part between Holly Beach proper and the ship channel where the beach was recently extended outward 200-250 ft. We've done well there, as it seems the water gets deep quickly and we also feel proximity to the jetties puts more bait in the area.

Make sure to bring some cane poles to jam in the jetties so you can hang your yoyos
