Big Lake Scratch - Jan 3, 2010
Josh and I hit the water today and laid a giant goose egg. Given the recent reports, or lack thereof, we decided to run to the south end of the lake. I was all excited to try out some new baits and some new colors. Well...
Water in the ship channel was around 48 degrees. First stop was Joe's cove where the water was around 49 - 49.5. Salinity and water clarity were both good, but so was the cold and the wind. No fish.
Next stop was West Cove. Water temp here was up to around 51.5 near the shallow flats. Fished here for a while and were treated to a whole flock of kamikaze pelicans. These birds were doing some serious dive bombing but we couldn't ever figure out what they were feeding on. I managed to hook one fish on a jerk jr. but lost it at the boat. No fish.
Moved on to another spot on the south side and were treated to the same old tune - decent wind and no fish.
Last stop on the list was turners. Water temp was around 49 and the water looked like chocolate milk. Visibility was about an inch. By this point we were beaten like a red headed step child and decided to graciously tap out. No mas.
No fish, no birds, no other boats. Plenty of cold. I am not one to quit, but I know when I've been beat, and I'm done for the next few weeks. Thankfully there is the Houston boat show to look forward to.
